Scheduled to coincide with the two major exhibitions set up in the Uffizi and in the Palatine Gallery to mark the centenary of the death of Caravaggio, the show displayed a series of Caravaggesque paintings belonging to the Fondazione di Studi di Storia dell’Arte Roberto Longhi, including the famous Boy Bitten by a Lizard from the artist’s youthful period. The series included paintings by his first followers Orazio Borgianni and Carlo Saraceni, works of absolute rarity which are now impossible to find on the market or in private collections, as well as works by Matthias Stomer, Dirk van Baburen, Valentin de Boulogne and Jusepe de Ribera.

The exhibition provided the opportunity to make better known the decisive contribution made by these works to the progress of Caravaggio studies.
